Online mediation

Family mediation that works wherever you are

How we can help

Online mediation offers everything you’d expect from an in-person service – the same qualified mediators, structured process, and legally recognised outcomes – without either party needing to travel or be in the same room.

UKMS online mediation sessions take place via secure video call. Whether you’re dealing with child arrangements, finances, property or other family matters like inheritance disputes, online mediation gives you access to a professional, confidential process from your own home.

Sessions that fit your life

Online scheduling is faster and more flexible, which means we can often get you into a MIAM within 24 hours, and you can arrange sessions around work, childcare, and other commitments.

Wherever you both are

Online mediation works just as well when parties are in different locations – even if one of you is overseas. Location isn’t a barrier to moving forward.

Your space, your pace

Engaging with difficult conversations from a familiar environment can make a real difference. Many clients find they’re better able to focus and communicate when they’re at home rather than in a formal setting.

The same legal outcomes

Online sessions produce the same results as in-person mediation and agreements can be formalised into a legally binding consent order.

Safe, secure and confidential

All sessions take place over an encrypted video platform. Everything discussed remains confidential, just as it would in a physical meeting room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Online mediation follows exactly the same process as in-person mediation – the difference is simply that sessions take place over secure video call (like Zoom) rather than in a meeting room.

The process begins with individual MIAMs for both parties. Once those are complete and mediation is assessed as suitable, joint sessions are scheduled at times that work for everyone. Sessions typically last around 90 minutes. If needed, sessions can also be conducted in shuttle format, with your mediator moving between separate video calls so both parties can participate without direct interaction.

Yes, the research and our own experience consistently show that online mediation achieves comparable outcomes to in-person sessions. Many clients say they find it easier to engage with difficult conversations from the comfort of their own home, and the flexibility of online scheduling often means sessions can be arranged more quickly.

The mediator’s role – facilitating discussion, managing the process, and helping both parties reach agreement – is the same online as in person. Agreements reached through online mediation can be formalised into a binding consent order in exactly the same way.

Very little – you’ll need a device with a camera and microphone (a laptop, tablet or phone work well), and a reliable internet connection. You’ll also need a private space where you can speak freely for the duration of the session.

Online mediation is suitable for a wide range of family disputes – including child arrangements, finances and property following separation, as well as other matters such as inheritance disputes.

As with any mediation, it requires both parties to be willing to engage. If you’re unsure whether it’s right for your situation, our free 15-minute consultation is a good place to start; we can talk through your circumstances and give you an honest assessment.

No, as long as both parties have access to a video call they can mediate regardless of location. Clients based in different parts of the country or overseas can participate easily, which is a key advantage of the online format.

Please note that while UKMS can conduct mediation across international locations, any resulting consent order will be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland.
